This grant supports an upgrade to geodynamics computing facility in the Department of Geological Sciences at the University of Colorado. The facility will support the research of faculty members Anne Sheehan, Craig Jones and Peter Molnar and their students for numerical calculations in seismology and geodynamics aimed at understanding crustal structure and mantle dynamics. The facility will also support the geochemical modeling efforts of Professor Lang Farmer and his students. Studies will include seismological investigation of the structure and dynamics of lithosphere at the root of Sierra Nevada orogen, seismic studies of the crystallographic orientation of mantle minerals to elucidate mantle convective dynamics, and studies of crustal deformation associated with the Indian-Eurasian continental collision, to name a few. The computational equipment will promote graduate student research requiring advanced numerical recipes.
