This award will support activities related to the International Year of Planet Earth (IYPE), a three year period (2007-2009) proclaimed by the United Nations to promote the contribution of Geosciences to sustainable development of society. This event will be used to inform decision makers and the general public of the contributions Earth Science makes to sustainable development and advances in society. The activities to be supported by this award are: 1) Geoscience Public Lecture Series; 2) Partner with Earth & Sky to brand relevant educational radio segments; 3) Education and outreach activities to promote IPYE. All these activities will be focused around 4 major themes that include: Human Health and the Environment (Earth and Health, Life), Ocean and Natural Resource Sustainability (soil, groundwater, resource issues, and oceans), Mitigating Hazards and Community Resilience (hazards, megacities, and solid earth), and Effects of Climate Change (climate).
