Lisa Park, EAR-1037971 The Paleontological Society

This grant will support the travel of American students of paleontology to the International Palaeontological Congress IPC in London. The IPC meets quadrennially representing paleontologists from a broad variety of biological disciplines. The IPC is sponsored by the International Palaeontological Association, as well as societies and institutions of the host country. It is open to all who are interested in paleontology. The meeting is planned for June 28 to July 3 2010 at the Museum of Natural History (London). It follows on from the very successful second IPC at Peking University in Beijing, China, and the first IPC, held in Sydney, Australia in 2002.

Project Report

The International Paleontological Congress is a major international scientific meeting held around the world once every 4 years under the auspices of the International Palaeontological Association. The meeting provides a showcase for all that is new and exciting in the fields of palaeontology and palaeobiology around the globe. The Third Paleontological Congress was held from June 28 through July 3, 2010. It was hosted by the British Palaeontological Association and by partner organizations in Great Britain. The meeting itself was based at Imperial College in London, and at the Natural History Museum in the heart of London's 'Albertopolis.' The National Science Foundation award to the Paleontological Society in support of student travel enabled 24 American graduate students to attend the Third International Paleontological Congress, representing American paleontology in general, and the Paleontological Society in particular. Students presented reports on their own paleontological research, and were also able to hear research reports presented by paleontology professionals and students from many other countries. Subjects covered included early forms of life; Paleozoic, Mesozoic, and Cenozoic plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates; and historical patterns and processes documented in the fossil record. An abstract volume of 432 pages, representing approximately 740 scientific presentations from the Third International Paleontological Congress is available at www.ipc3.org/docs/ProgrammeAbstractsfull.pdf.
