The proposal by Dr. Jairo Sinova of Texas A&M Research Foundation requests funds for a Workshop on Semiconductor Nano-Spintronics: Spin-Hall Effect and Related Issues, to be held at the Asian Pacific Center for Theoretical Physics (APCTP) in Pohang University of Science and Technology in Korea in August 2005. NSF funds are requested to support participation in the workshop by seven junior researchers and three senior researchers. The researchers include several scientists from underrepresented racial, ethnic or gender groups. The workshop, organized by a team of collaborators from the U.S., Korea, Japan and Hong Kong, will provide an overview of the spin-Hall effect, discuss theoretical studies recent research progress and address several related controversies. The meeting will also expose Western scientists to the extensive and noteworthy research being carried out by Asian researchers in the spintronics field in order to initiate and solidify direct collaborations between the two scientific communities.
