OISE-0528068 Anderson, Robert F. , Columbia U./ Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory
This award supports the participation of two U.S. researchers from Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory to attend a regional planning workshop for the international GEOTRACES Program in Xiamen, China in August 2005. Researchers from Australia, Korea, Japan, U.K., Hong Kong, and Taiwan are also expected to attend. GEOTRACES is a global study of the marine biogeochemical cycles of trace elements and their isotopes. The PI is a co-chair of the GEOTRACES program; the co-PI is the liaison between the U.S. GEOTRACES program and the Chinese GEOTRACES planning effort. The Chinese host organization is the College of Oceanography and Environment at Xiamen University. The workshop is seen as the initial stage of an international program that would run for 15 years.
The GEOTRACES program is timely for the current state of oceanographic research. Coverage of a major fraction of the global ocean - the northwestern and southwestern Pacific - requires the involvement of the relevant oceanographic regional institutions in the initial research planning and in cruise coordination.
