In this U.S.-Brazil planning visit supported by the Americas Program of the Office of International Science and Engineering, Claudia Polini of the University of Notre Dame and Alberto Corso of the University of Kentucky will initiate a program of collaborative research on commutative algebra with Aron Simis of Universidade Federal de Pernambuco (UFPE), Brazil. Projects involving the computation of integral closure and investigation of Cohen-MaCaulayness and Noetherianness for Rees Algebras are proposed.

The goal of the planning visit is to establish a collaborative research program among US and Brazilian researchers in commutative algebra. The questions posed are natural in commutative algebra with geometric implications, and the PIs have done important work in related areas in the past. Any follow-on project would strengthen collaborations with foreign scientists and provide international research experiences for students. The PI is a female researcher, an underrepresented group in mathematics who would be a good role model for students.
