This project provides partial travel fellowships to students enrolled in U.S. universities in order to facilitate their attending the 2010 International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC) held November 7-11, 2010 in Shanghai, China. ISWC is a major international forum where visionary and state-of-the-art research on all aspects of the Semantic Web is presented. Priority will be given to students selected to participate in the doctoral consortium, followed by students who are first author on a paper accepted at the conference, followed by students who have other authorship on a conference or related workshop paper. The purpose of this project is to allow students to share their research ideas, receive constructive feedback, and develop connections that will enhance their research careers. The project is expected to support between 10 and 15 students.

Project Report

The International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC) is the premiere conference for Semantic Web research. Its particpants aim to augment the existing Web to enable more intelligent, automated access to information on the Internet, as well as large-scale intranets. ISWC is held annually and the venue rotates between Europe, North America, and Asia. ISWC 2010 was held in Shanghai, China, making it very expensive for United States-based researchers to attend. The purpose the the ISWC Travel Fellowship Program was to increase the representation and participation of United States-based graduate students in the conference. Many of these students would not have been able to attend without the support provided. Priority was given to students that were presenting work at the conference, including students who were presenting papers in the doctoral consortium (where students can receive feedback on their dissertation research from senior researchers), the research track and workshops. In the end, 12 students from a diverse range of universities were supported by the program. Attending major international conferences is an important part of the development and training of young scientists. Not only does it expose them to the latest research ideas, but allows them to establish connections with, and receive feedback from top international researchers. As such, they are better prepared to contribute to the next generation of scientific discoveries.
