This award provides support to students and other young researchers for travel and accommodation to the International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) 2012 to be held at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, June 26-July 1, 2012. The International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) is held annually and is considered to be the premier conference in Machine Learning. The students funded via this grant will be selected by a peer review process based on their financial need and alignment of research areas. The student selection process will also take into consideration goals of broadening participation, both to traditionally underrepresented groups and to students whose institutions may have limited machine learning resources. The students will get an opportunity to network with experts in the area and gain valuable insights into the cutting edge of Machine Learning research. These student scholarships are very important for encouraging student participation in this premier conference and for shaping the future of the field as a whole.

Project Report

The International Conference on Machine Learning (ICML) is held annuallyand is considered to be the premier conference in Machine Learning. ICML2012 was held from June 25 to 29 in Edinburgh, Scotland. Students wishing to receive a travel scholarship were required to sendin an application. The student funding chair and others chose among the applicants. The selection process took into consideration goals of broadening participation, both to traditionally underrepresented groups, and to students whose institutions may have limited Machine Learning resources, and for whom the opportunity to interact with the broad array of researchers from the international community was deemed to be especially beneficial. A total of 65 students from US Universities applied for travel scholarships. Of these, we provided travel support to 40 (37 with papers at the conference and 3 without). In particular, we funded all five women applicants as well as applicants from under represented universities. A small amount of money was left over, which was used to fund student travel to ICML 2013. In summary, attendance at ICML represents a unique opportunity forstudents interested in Machine Learning research. Our goal is tofacilitate the integration of graduate students into the researchcommunity by providing them with a forum to talk to leading scientistsin the field about their Ph.D. research and how it is situated in thebroader efforts of the field. The students viewed their experience veryfavorably.
