This student travel grant supports graduate students enrolled in U.S. institutions to attend the premier conference in the multimedia area, ACM Multimedia 2013. It is a top scientific conference in the area of multimedia, covering latest technical trends, system demos, grand challenges, open source software competition, innovative new ideas, doctoral symposium, and many other innovative activities. Participation in such an event allows students to interact with the leading experts from around the world, learn cutting edge research, develop professional networks, and interact with industry leaders involved in practical applications and technology transfer. The opportunity is broadcast to the broad community and students from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

Project Report

This grant provides travel support for ten graduate students enrolled in US education institutions to attend the premiere conference in the multimedia area, ACM Multimedia Conference (ACMMM), which was held in Barcelona Catalonia, Spain during October 21-25, 2013. ACMMM is the most prestigious conference, covering latest technical trends, tutorials of emerging topics, brave new ideas, technical demos, industry exhibitions, grand challenge competitions, open source software competition, doctoral symposium, and many other unique activities. A sepcial event dedicated to Women in Multimedia was also organized at the conference. The acceptance rate of the full paper track has been very low, consistently below 20% over the last 20 years. It cover many important areas such as Multimedia Content Analysis and Processing, Multimedia Search and Retrieval, Mobile and Location-Based Media, Social Media, Multimedia Systems and Middleware, Multimedia Transport and Sharing, Multimedia Security and Forensics, Multimedia Authoring, Production and Consumption, Multimedia Interaction and Applications, and finally Multimedia Art, Entertainment and Culture. A committee was set up to review applications, from which ten students from US universities were awarded the travel support. The NSF travel support has been very helpful for training graduate students and next-generation talents in this critical field of great importance to the information technology industry and many other sectors.
