This award provides renewed funding for a REU site at the University of Rhode Islands Graduate School of Oceanography (GSO). The program will support nine student internships each summer for three years. The students will participate in a ten-week independent research program and will receive a weekly stipend, food allowance, housing, and travel to and from GSO. They will be mentored by faculty from GSO and will participate in a variety of seminars and workshops designed to help them prepare presentations and papers and succeed in graduate school. Students will be recruited nationwide, with special attention given to the recruitment of minority students. They will complete a written report and give an oral presentation of their research. The program will provide a total of 27 students with an in-depth independent research experience and training that will help them succeed in scientific careers. This site is supported by the Department of Defense in partnership with the NSF REU program.
