This experimental research program focuses on the study of the behavior of spin-polarized paramagnetic atoms in cold buffer gases. The goal is to achieve electron spin-coherence lifetimes on the order of one minute, demonstrate an atomic magnetometer with shot-noise limited sensitivity and to explore a broad area of applications of such systems. The broader impact of the program involves student training as well as advances in magnetometry.
