This experimental research program focuses on the study and control of quantum mechanical electron wave packets. This control will be used to increase the sensitivity of a new measuring device (a grating electron interferometer) developed by the PI's group. This control will also be used to affect the delivery of ultrashort electron pulses on a target. The electron interferometer and the ultrashort electron pulses will be used to test one of the most fundamental quantum mechanical phenomena; the Aharonov Bohm effect. This effect is also a demonstration of local gauge invariance, which is a guiding principle in the construction of our most advanced physical theories.

Not only will these tools allow better understanding of fundamental quantum mechanics, but the technological impact extends to electromagnetic field sensors and time resolved electron microscopy. The broader impact involves student training at the undergraduate and graduate levels in a research environment, as well as curriculum development employing interactive educational methods.
