The Division of Particles and Fields (DPF) of the American Physical Society will provide for partial support of the travel expenses of student presenters at the 2012 APS meeting being held on March 31-April 3, 2012 in Atlanta, Georgia.

Project Report

This grant helped to support 1 high school student, 5 undergraduate students, and fourteen graduate students travel to the 2012 April American Physical Society meeting in Atlanta, Georgia to present either a talk (19 of the students) or a poster at a session sponsored by the Division of Particles and Fields (DPF). The maximum amount of funding for each student was $500. The recipients were chosen through an application to the DPF executive committee with a support letter requested from their U.S. institutional faculty advisor. The University of Kansas administered the funding as Prof. Alice Bean was the secretary/treasurer of the DPF during this time. This opportunity allowed the students to attend this international conference and hear presentations from a wide range of topics on the most up-to-date physics research and supported their professional development in the field. Nobel prize winners presented talks describing their work on dark energy. There were plenary sessions that included presentations on results from the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) and descriptions of string theory. The students presented results from experiments in neutrino physics, experiments at the LHC and other proton colliders, theory, accelerator physics, a muon experiment to understand the quantum numbers, and results of tests of new instrumentation for building new particle detectors and accelerators.
