This award supports two international workshops: "GPS in the IPY: the POLENET Project" to be held in Dresden, Germany, in October, 2006; and "Seismology in the IPY: the POLENET Project" to be held in San Francisco in conjunction with AGU in December, 2006. POLENET is the Polar Earth Observing Network, an International Polar Year project to deploy GPS and seismic stations through the Antarctic and Arctic for glaciologic and geologic research. Planned by a twenty-four nation consortium, these workshops will coordinate deployment, technology transfer, analysis, dissemination, and education and outreach strategies.

In terms of broader impacts, these workshops will foster international collaboration and data sharing. Graduates student participation will offer experience in global, collaborative research, and contribute to the IPY objective of training the next generation of scientists and engineers. Plans for education and outreach will be also developed at the workshops.
