The purpose of this proposal is to obtain funding for the third annual inter-Science of Learning Centers (iSLC) Conference entitled "Learning in Action: Applications and Implementation? and hosted by the NSF-funded Center of Excellence for Learning in Education, Science, and Technology (CELEST) in Boston, Massachusetts on May 23-25, 2010. These funds will be used to cover participant costs including travel, meals, and accommodations as well as facilities at Boston University. The 2010 Conference will build upon the previous Conferences by including cross-Center collaborative oral presentations in both symposia and methodology workshops. In addition, this Conference will contain a CELEST research highlight giving iSLC participants the opportunity to learn more about CELEST research and to engage in research level discussions with CELEST faculty. Finally, the Conference will immediately follow CELEST?s annual International Conference on Cognitive and Neural Systems (ICCNS), giving participants the opportunity to attend both Conferences.

Project Report

Heather Ames, PI The 2010 inter-Science of Learning Centers (iSLC) Conference was hosted by the graduate students and postdocs of the Center of Excellence for Learning in Education, Science, and Technology (CELEST) and was held on the Boston University campus in Boston MA on May 23 – 25, 2010. This conference was the third annual iSLC event and involved participants from all 6 NSF Science of Learning Centers (SLCs): CELEST, LIFE, PSLC, VL2, TDLC, and SILC. The 2010 conference theme of "Learning in Action: Applications and Implementation" allowed the iSLC participants to present applied or implemented work beyond basic research questions. Moreover, this theme helped participants to discuss how research in learning can be applied in the real world. The 2010 iSLC conference built upon the two previous iSLC conferences by including multi-center oral symposia, poster sessions, and collaborative across-center methodology workshops. There were five oral symposia sessions with four speakers in each session, giving an oral research presentation opportunity to 20 iSLC participants. In addition, the 2010 iSLC conference contained a CELEST research highlights session of four short presentations by CELEST senior faculty members followed by roundtable discussions.
