The objective of this Workshop proposal, supported by the Energy, Power and Adaptive Systems program in ECCS is to increase the participation of faculty across the nation in three workshops planned to disseminate educational material and approaches developed at the University of Minnesota through the ONR Grant "Center for Reforming Undergraduate Education in Electric Energy Systems." This effort was aided by a previous NSF grant "ONR/NSF-Sponsored Workshop: Reforming Electric Energy Systems Curriculum." Through these two grants, five faculty workshops were held and three more are planned to promote curriculum reform in undergraduate education in Electric Energy Systems.

Project Report

The objective of this project was to continue the dissemination of the educational material and approaches developed at the University of Minnesota through the ONR Grant "Center for Reforming Undergraduate Education in Electric Energy Systems" at the University of Minnesota. This effort was aided by an NSF grant "ONR/NSF-Sponsored Workshop: Reforming Electric Energy Systems Curriculum." In this project, three workshops were held towards the project goal during Feb 2-5, 2012, Feb 7-10, 2013 and Feb 6-9, 2014 in Napa, CA. Each workshop had nearly 150 participants including approximately 50 academic administrators (ECE Dept Heads, Engineering, etc.). As an example, the agenda for the 2014 workshop was as follows: Workshop Objectives: Discuss the Electric Energy Systems Curriculum with emphasis on Sustainability – Describe and disseminate the developed undergraduate curriculum – Describe the graduate curriculum being developed through ONR funding – Create a large and vibrant community of teaching/learning scholars – Provide details of various project tasks in conjunction with ONR 6.1 Program Review Thursday, February 6, 2014 - Arrival Friday, February 7, 2014 8:00-9:00 Welcome Remarks - Dr. Mostafa Kaveh, Associate Dean for Research and Planning, University of Minnesota - Dr. Peter Cho, Program Officer, Office of Naval Research (ONR) - Dr. Pramod Khargonekar, Assistant Director and Head of Engineering Directorate - NSF 9:00-10:00 Power-Related CUSP™ Curriculum - Ned Mohan, UMN 10:00-10:45 Open Discussion and Networking - Coffee break 10:45-11:30 ONR-funded Graduate Curriculum Development – Part 1 Graduate course on Power Electronics (Moderator: Bill Robbins, Hari Krishnaswami, Prasad Enjeti, Eric Persson, Amit Jain, Chris Henze); Nisa Khan on LED Lighting 11:30-1:00 p.m. Networking and Lunch (on your own) 1:00-3:00 ONR-funded Graduate Curriculum Development – Part 2 Graduate Course on Power Systems (Moderator: Sairaj Dhople, Clark Gellings, Virgilio Centeno, Dharshana Mithumuni, Ram Adapa, Ned Mohan) Power System Protection: Pratap Mysore, HDR Inc.
