EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. The UC Davis International Maternal and Child Health and Nutrition Research Training Program will be established to strengthen and sustain the capability of selected developing countries to conduct research on maternal and child health and nutrition issues and related aspects of child developmental disorders, and to apply this knowledge locally to improve women's and children's health and function. These objectives will be accomplished through: 1)pre-doctoral training of nine students leading to a PhD degree awarded by the Graduate Groups of Nutrition and Epidemiology 2) post-doctoral research training of six MDs or PhDs for one year each in these same disciplines, 3) inter-institutional exchanges of faculty members, other scientific staff, and students (amounting to 24 person-months of short-term training), 4) collaborative research projects, including one-time research support for newly trained PhDs at the time of reentry into their home countries, and 5) technical assistance to governments, international agencies, and non-governmental agencies in these countries. The Training Program will be managed by the UC Davis Program in International Nutrition (PIN), an interdepartmental program that coordinates research and training on human nutrition problems of low-income countries, with particular emphasis on the nutrition and health of children and women. The PIN offers a Designated Emphasis (or minor) in International Nutrition to doctoral students in the aforementioned graduate groups. Support provided by the Fogarty International Center will be augmented by UC Davis through provision of six non-resident tuition fellowships for two years each (total of 12person-years of non-resident tuition release, equivalent to approximately $132,000) and by counterpart support of faculty and administrative staff. The international collaborating centers are: the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research in Dhaka, Bangladesh; the Nutrition Research Institute in Lima, Peru; the Institute of Nutrition of Central America and Panama in Guatemala City, Guatemala; the Institute of Public Health in Cuernavaca, Mexico; and the University of Ghana in Legon (Accra), Ghana. These centers have been selected because of their 1) important prior research contributions to MCHN, both globally and in their respective countries, 2) long-standing collaborative links with UC Davis, and 3) desire to further strengthen their research activities through ongoing training and inter-institutional collaboration with UCDavis.
