This research will focus on the management of diabetes and cardiac risk factors in elderly patients. Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and diabetes are two major public health problems, particularly in the elderly. By the year 2040, the elderly population in the United States will make up 20 to 24 percent of the population. It is projected that 19 percent of the elderly will be aged 85 or above and this population will grow to at least 12.8 million. An extensive literature review revealed that there has been research focusing on short and long-term outcomes in patients with either acute myocardial infarction (MI) or diabetes. Despite this, little is known about these combined conditions and their relationship to outcomes. In addition, management of diabetes and cardiac risk factors before and after MI have not been studied in the context of outcomes in these patients. The purpose of this preliminary clinical trial is to determine the relationship between management of diabetes and cardiac risk factors, and selected outcomes in elderly patients with diabetes following MI.
