The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.A5164 is a randomized, phase IV study of the strategy of immediate versus deferred antiretroviral therapy (ARV therapy or treatment, or ART) in subjects with advanced immunodeficiency syndrome who are presenting with acute AIDS-related opportunistic infection (OIs) or serious bacterial infections (BIs). There will be two steps and two arms in this study. All subjects will enter Step 1 and be randomized either to receive ART within 14 days after starting therapy for the acute OI/BI ('immediate' group or Arm A) or to have ART deferred ('deferred' group or Arm B).
