This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of the Ponseti method for the correction of clubfoot in patients who were treated before 1971. This group of patients represents the first group of clubfoot patients to be treated with the Ponseti method and so this study will represent the longest follow-up to date. This study will evaluate the initial treatment variables (including number of casts required for correction, surgeries, and relapses), the radiographic appearance of the foot and the present day functional outcome (as measured by pain, mobility, and deformity). Information concerning the stresses placed on the foot will include BMI, weight, occupation, hours spent standing each day, and level of physical activity through the years. This study will also utilize an age-matched control group without congenital abnormalities of the feet as a standard reference with which to compare the patients that were treated for clubfoot. This control population will be obtained from the Ophthalmology clinic and will undergo a physical exam to rule out any congenital abnormality and will fill out a functional foot questionnaire. No x-rays will be obtained from the control group.
