This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. Patients with HIV are often co-infected with Hepatitis C virus (HCV), and the combination of these two infections leads to a worse prognosis for the HCV infection with respect to progression to cirrhosis. This is a multicenter, phase II, open-label, 2-arm, long-term (90 wk) trial of PEG-IFN (SQ qw)/ribavirin (po qd) in patients who are HCV-therapy na ve or who have failed to clear HCV with standard IFNa to determine whether it slows the rate of progression of hepatic fibrosis. While taking the drugs patients will undergo venipunctures and liver biopsies. Worldwide this is a significant problem leading to a great deal of morbidity and mortality. This will seek to determine whether this form of therapy works in a preliminary fashion.
