This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. This project will recruit children 6 to 13 years of age, including 40 children with single ventricle after the Fontan operation, 40 children after heart transplant, and 40 healthy children as controls. Enrolled children will be randomized to a 6-week exercise training program or computer class in the summer. Subjects will have one full-day visit to the outpatient GCRC before and after the exercise training. Nutrition assessment, DEXA scan, MRI of thigh, echocardiogram, pulmonary function test and cycle ergometer exercise test will be performed. Blood will be drawn for catecholamine and cytokine assays. The parents will fill out two questionnaires. After GCRC visit, the subjects will wear an activity monitor for 2 weeks.
