Role of the Administrative CoreThe Administrative Core provides both administrative as well as intellectual oversight and guidanceand financial accounting for the Program. Ms. Bette Sheehan and Mr. Randy Martinson provide the administrativeand financial expertise required for this Core.Ms. Bette Sheehan oversees the communal administrative services for this program. She organizesthe weekly student and postdoctoral seminars initiated and maintained by this Program. She administersand facilitates each project's fulfilling the ever-increasing documentation required to carry out our researchincluding human subjects safety approval, vertebrate animal use approval, biological safety approval, andchemical safety approval. She organizes meetings of the project leaders, archiving their manuscripts, andoverseeing their students' committee meetings. It is these efforts that provide one means for Dr. Sugden asthe principal investigator to stay abreast of the current research carried out by Program members. Hisweekly meetings with the Project leaders and their combined weekly staff meeting, which is also organizedby Ms. Sheehan, provides a second means for Dr. Sugden to affect this Program's research. Ms. Sheehanwill also organize the visits of our scientific advisory board members. We propose to bring the membersindividually and sometimes together to Madison to foster excellence in our cancer research.Mr. Randy Martinson oversees the financial accounting for this Program-Project grant. He provideseach project leader ongoing reports of their budgets and expenditures and informs Dr. Sugden of potentialdifficulties before they occur. He is instrumental in obtaining the most competitive prices for the supplies weuse. For example, he organized the Program's initiating a contract with a vendor of restriction endonucleaseswhich provides us not only the lowest possible prices but also immediate access to them, their beingstored in McArdle. Mr. Martinson also guides project leaders in their projecting accurately future budgetsand in meeting the accounting demands of federal and state governments, the University, and the MedicalSchool through which the Program's funds are administered.Intellectual oversight and guidance is provided by two facets of this core. Dr. Sugden usually meetswith project leaders multiple times per week to discuss science and personnel. He is a member on thedissertation committees of the majority of the graduate students carrying out the research of this program.He reads many of the manuscripts describing this program's research in their initial draft form and suggestsrevisions where appropriate. It is also clear that all of the project leaders are established experts in theirfields so that a major contribution Dr. Sugden has and will continue to make to this program is to fostercollaboration between them. For example, it is in part through his efforts that Drs. Paul Ahlquist and PaulLambert and he have united in their goal to identify additional human cancers that may be caused byhuman tumor viruses.The second facet by which this core will provide intellectual oversight and guidance for its researchis through its scientific advisory board. Four experts whose research overlaps project areas shall come andreview the program's science critically each year. Dr. DiMaio is an expert in papillomaviruses with a breadthof understanding of virology in general. Dr. Rooney is an expert in Epstein-Barr virus with experience indeveloping research findings into effective therapies for treating EBV-associated cancers. They are notbeing asked to critique the grant application but rather to visit and critically review ongoing research. Theproject leaders and key researchers will present their current and proposed research for all to discuss. Theprogram members want these expert colleagues to grow to know their science and .to help theircollaborations flourish. Dr. Sugden will meet privately with the advisors at the end of each visit to seek anysensitive suggestions about his fostering the success of the program.
