This is a new application submitted under a National Cancer Institute (NCI) Program Announcement, """"""""Cancer Surveillance Using Health Claims-Based Data."""""""" The overall aim of the proposed study is to investigate the completeness and accuracy of patient level health claims data in measuring cancer incidence, stage and treatment. One arm of the study will examine the merged Medicare-SEER database to determine the overall accuracy of Medicare data and the accuracy separately of Part A and Part B data for studying the incidence, stage, and treatment of cancer. The second arm of the study will compare the accuracy of information in the Ohio Medicaid Policy Database (MPD) files with that of two cancer registries: the Ohio Cancer Incidence Surveillance System (OCISS) and the Cancer Data System (CDS) for the metropolitan Cleveland area. Six common cancers (colorectal, pancreatic, lung, breast, prostate, and endometrial) and three treatments, i.e. surgery, chemotherapy and radiation therapy, will be studied in the merged Medicare-SEER database. The Ohio Medicaid project will study cervical cancer.
