I Despitethefactthatfunctionaml agneticresonanciemaging(fMRI)studieshavebecomeubiquitousandareofeverincreasing importancfeor clinicalandbasicneurosciencesth, efundamentarlelationshipbsetweenbloodoxygenatiolneveldependen(tBOLD) andelectrophysiologicreasl ponsersegardingspatiael xtentandamplitudeis notwellunderstoodN.umerousBOLDstudiesata coarsescale(severaml illimetetro centimeteri)ndicateda faircorrelatiobnetweentheloci of hemodynamicactivityandthe spatialocalizationofbrainfunctionsknown1reintraditionaslingleunitandlesionstudies.Howevert,heBOLDsignalisnota directmeasureofneuronalctivityperse.Ratheri,t isa complexconvolutioonf changesincerebraml etabolicrateofoxygen (CURe2),cerebrabl loodflow(CBF)andcerebrabl loodvolume(CBV)followingfocalneuronalctivity.Thereforea, directand linearcorrelationbetweentheamplitudeoftheobservablBeOLDsignalsandtheunderlyingneuralactivityatthe neurophysiologicalilmy portants,ub-millimetesrcale,canthereforenotbeassumeda priori.Inthepresentstudyw, esuggesto addressthesequestionsinadirectmanner.First,weproposeto performsingle/mulutinitrecordingandBOLDfMRIfromthesame sitesofthecatprimaryvisualcortexusinga novel'Cartesiangrid'techniqurecentlydevelopedinourlaboratoryS. econdw, e willelucidatethecontributioonl spikingandsubthresholdcorticalactivityinthe observedBOLDcontrastbycarefullymapping theextraclassicavlersusclassicarleceptivefieldboundariesA.ndthird,neuroactivceompoundsthatareknownto influencethe balancebetweenexcitatoryandinhibitorycorticalactivitywillbeinfusedfocallyduringfunctionaMl RIscans.Inparticular, theeffectofGABAandbicuculline(GABA-Aantagonisto)ntheamplitudet,imecoursea, ndspatialextendof BOLDsignalswillbe tested.Insummaryw, ebelievethatourprojectwillprovidepivotalinsightsintothefundamentaplointsofcontactbetweenthe observablea,ndubiquitousBOLDcontrasta, nditsunderlyingneurophysiologicoarligin.
