The primary goal of this project is to develop computer assisted image analysis techniques to automate the morphometric analysis of muscle and nerve fiber cross sections. Automated image analysis techniques are being developed whereby a computer and image analysis system can locate, isolate and measure parameters of muscle and nerve fibers as seen in conventional transverse tissue sections. With minimal assistance from a human operator, the computer will carry out the individual fiber measurements and compile parameters and parameter distributions on a sample by sample basis. It is hoped that this technique will replace the conventional tedious and error-prone manual techniques.
