Texas Southern University (TSU) in collaboration with the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB), the University of Texas at Houston Health Science Center Medical School (UTHHSC), Baylor College of Medicine (BCM), the University of Texas School of Biomedical Sciences at Houston (UTSBS), the University of Houston (UH), the University of Wisconsin- Madison, and Purdue University have designed an M.S. to Ph.D. Transition Program to increase the number of historically underrepresented minorities (Blacks, Hispanics, American Indians, and Pacific Islanders) in the biomedical sciences. The current application is a resubmission of a 1993 application and has a new Program Director. The goal of the Program is the recruitment, retention, and graduation of M.S. degree minority students from specific minority colleges and universities to enroll in a special Transition Program with an upgraded curriculum that will enhance their transition into Ph.D. programs in the biomedical sciences. The program will include: (1) an upgraded core curriculum, (2)participation in special workshops and seminars, (3)academic advisement emphasizing Ph.D. degree programs, (4) networking and visitations to research laboratories, (5) participation in a monthly Journal Club, (6) participation in a Recombinant DNA Technology and Gene Mapping course, and (7) an Annual Graduate Student Symposium at Texas/Southern University. Students will select a faculty advisor, design a research problem, and conduct research for their theses.
