The goals and objectives of the application from Purdue University are to (1) increase the number of underrepresented minorities entering careers in biomedical research and (2) encourage the development and expansion of programs to improve the academic and research competitiveness of minority students at the undergraduate and graduate level. The main thrust of the Purdue University application is to train six doctoral students per year in three areas of biomedical sciences: biology, biochemistry and molecular biology, and chemistry. The second component of the application involves the establishment of an eight-week Summer Research Institute, in which 20 undergraduate students will work in two molecular biology laboratories in groups of four with a research director and graduate research assistants. The students will work on projects that are designed to introduce the major techniques of modern molecular biology in a way that fosters the understanding of experimental design, interpretation of data, and posing and testing hypotheses. This research experience is designed to increase the research skills of the undergraduates and foster the interactions between members of each group. The program will be enriched with faculty activities; it includes an orientation program, faculty-led discussions of research design and methodology, group meetings which address topics pertinent to graduate study, a GRE preparation series, technical writing preparation, and final research preparations. The third component of the program will be a faculty exchange between HBCUs, HSIs, and Purdue. With these exchanges, it is anticipated that Purdue University can be enlightened about the best ways to foster the education of their student participants. Purdue proposes to form an advisory committee and to employ a consultant to evaluate the program. It is stated that over 100 students and several HBCU and HSI faculty will be impacted by this four-year grant.
