Texas Woman s University (TWU) and Tarrant County Junior College- Northeast Campus (TCJC) propose to implement a transition program in biomedical science. The program goal is to assist more individuals from underrepresented minority groups to pursue a baccalaureate degree in science as well as a career in biomedical research.
The specific aims of the program are: 1) to provide opportunities for minority students to learn about careers in biomedical research; 2) to recruit ten participants for the proposed transition program in each of the two funding years; 3) to help participating students excel in the classroom during their freshman and sophomore years through individualized tutoring, attentive counseling and a student support group; 4) to provide opportunities for participating students to learn more about biomedical research by offering seminars, laboratory tours, a summer course, research-related events and access to research mentors as well as peer mentors; 5) to match all participating students with individual research mentors to obtain direct research experience as part of a mentor s laboratory team; 6) to motivate and guide at least 95 percent of the participating students (19 out of 20 in two years) to complete both levels of the program, enroll in a baccalaureate degree-granting institution and pursue a career in biomedical research; and 7) to develop opportunities for research collaborations among faculty at TCJC and TWU, and to have TCJC faculty assist TWU mentors with participating students. Program evaluation and student tracking will be both continuous and comprehensive to ensure that the program is as effective as possible.
