A Supplement to: NIGMS (5R35GM126935)--EPR Spectroscopic Studies of Membrane Proteins In Response to: PA-18-906, Research Supplement to Promote Diversity in Health-Related Research Project Summary/Abstract Ms. Yazmyne Richardson career goal is to become a professor at a national University. She enjoys teaching and research and wants to work with a combination of undergraduate and graduate students. She is very passionate about training the next generation of scientists. The research training and career development plan in this supplement application is tailor-made to help her achieve this goal. Her research is a critical part of the MIRA project currently funded by NIGMS. She will have an active support network of faculty and staff to help her navigate a path to achieve her career goals. Prof. Gary Lorigan will be the main mentor and Prof. Carole Dabney-Smith and Prof. Andrea Kravats will serve as co-mentors. The following individuals at Miami University will also provide valuable research and career development training for her: Dr. Rob McCarrick, Dr. Anne Carroll, Yasmin Jessa, and Dr. Andrew Morris. The application has a research and career development plan Research Training Plan: The research training plan for Ms. Yazmyne Richardson will match perfectly with the MIRA NIGMS grant. The focus of her Ph.D. dissertation work will be to develop new methods to improve structural studies of integral membrane proteins using a variety of biophysical techniques. She is developing new biophysical methods with polymers to serve as nanodiscs to better study the structural and dynamic properties of membrane proteins using a variety of structural and biophysical techniques. Yazmyne will get lots of training in biophysical instrumentation (EPR and NMR spectroscopy) and standard molecular biology/biochemistry methods to help her prepare the membrane protein samples in the lab. She has already learned to express and purify the KCNE1 protein and incorporate it into liposomes. Career Development Plan: The PI (Gary Lorigan) and the Department of Chemistry at Miami University will be able to help Yazmyne Richardson obtain her career goals by providing numerous professional development opportunities. She will take courses in biophysics and methods to improve her teaching skills. She will take courses on how to give scientific presentations for the public. Dr. Lorigan will give her feedback and constructive criticism on both her scientific results and her speaking ability. Yazmyne will attend several conferences as part of her graduate training and give posters and oral presentations. She will have the opportunity to attend the Annual Biomedical Research Conference for Minority Students (ABRCMS). She will attend several professional development sessions that discuss the development of research proposals, safety, scientific presentations, ethics in science, careers. She will attend grant writing workshops to help her develop the skill set to become an independent PI. She will get co-mentored by 2 successful women (Prof. Carole Dabney-Smith and Prof. Andrea Kravats). Finally, Ms. Richardson will also serve as a role model and mentor to undergraduate students in the Lewis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation (LSAMP) Alliance program. Ms. Richardson will meet up every year with her dissertation committee to discuss her research progress. Professor Lorigan her dissertation advisor will meet up with her weekly to discuss her research and teaching progress to help her achieve her career goals. 1
