EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. Two of the most important types of transformations in modern day organic chemistry are cross-coupling methods to form carbon-carbon bonds and the reduction of prochiral molecules The development of new, improved, more general and readily applicable methods for these transformations is at the forefront of drug discovery as the weaknesses of the current techniques limit the rate of success realized by the use of combinatorial methods Thus, new methods will allow a more ready means to discover new lead compounds in the quest for new chemotherapeutic agents Once these are found, the new methods will provide scientists with a greatly enhanced ability to modify these lead compounds into medicinally interesting agents of increased efficiency and decreased toxicity Further, ideal methods will also allow for the economical and efficient preparation of these compounds in quantities necessary for pharmacological evaluation A major component of this work will involve the development of new techniques for the preparation of enantiomerically pure molecules The different enantiomers (molecules of different handedness) interact with receptors and proteins in different ways A key issue in modern drug development and synthesis is access to compounds of a single handedness A key aspect of our work is to develop the means to make important compounds readily available in enantiomerically pure form PERFORMANCE SITE ========================================Section End===========================================
