EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. A powerful approach for unlocking the mechanisms of substance abuse is the combined application of pharmacology and neuroscience to the problem of drug addiction. A new program is proposed to train predoctoral and postdoctoral students in the fundamentals of pharmacology and neuroscience with special emphasis on substance abuse research. The program uniquely combines training in molecular and cellular pharmacology with training in chemical neuroanatomy and behavioral neurosciences. The program will be conducted by a multidisciplinary faculty and will take advantage of a wide range of resources available at the University of California Irvine for the conduct of substance abuse research. The program will involve 20 primary training faculty with appointments in 5 different Departments. All mentors are experienced trainers who run active research laboratories that utilize modern approaches to address important pharmacology and neuroscience questions. Four predoctoral and 2 postdoctoral traineeships are requested for the duration of the proposed program. Traineeships will be used to support predoctoral students for one year at the beginning of their thesis work, and postdoctoral students starting a research program on the neurobiology of substance abuse. During this time, both predoctoral and postdoctoral students will attend a series of workshops designed to expose the students to the challenges and excitement of substance abuse research. Following completion of this program, trainees will be qualified for careers in neuroscience and pharmacology in basic science departments and medical schools, or for research careers in non-academic research laboratories.
