EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. > This renewal application seeks to continue the support for the training of predoctoral students in the focused area of basic cardiovascular research. Since the inception of this graduate program, partially supported by this grant, we have graduated 10 students, all of whom have been well placed in post-doctoral or faculty positions. In addition, we have been designated an inter-departmental graduate program by the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences of Baylor College of Medicine, reflecting out considerable impact within the local scientific community. As a result, we have expanded our faculty considerably, which now encompasses most of the cardiovascular directed research within the institution, and representing a variety of basic science and clinical departments. Thus the basic research opportunities for our students have increased considerably as well. While significant new areas have been introduced the already broad availability has also been considerably strengthened. The major underlying paradigm for this training program has always been and continues to be the emphasis on the direct connections between the latest molecular biological technologies and functional cardiovascular physiology and pathology.
