EXCEEDTHESPACEPROVIDED. This is a new application to provide support for short-termresearchtraining experiences at the MedicalUniversityof South Carolina for six dental students per year in areas relatedto dental medicine and craniofacial biology. The College of DentalMedicine Summer Research Program(CDMERP)will attract dental students to careers inbiomedicalresearchby providing rewarding research experiencesoutside the regular course of studies at an early stage intheir professionaleducation. The programwill provide 10-12week laboratory and patient-orientedresearch apprenticeshipsfor dental students duringthe summer following the first year of dental school. It builds on significant strengths at MUSC inthree arenas: 1) a strong commitment of the Universityto encouragestudents inthe health professions to experience research in its Summer Research Programwhich has been in continualoperation for over 20 years; 2) an outstanding cadre of basicscience andclinical researchfaculty members, who are collaborative and well-fundedby NIH institutesand peer-reviewsponsors; and 3) a portfolioof complementary undergraduate, short-termhealthprofessional, doctoral degree, and postgraduatetraining programs, supported by NIH institutesand institutional funds. The Program Director is a highly interactiveand collaborative scientist and an outstanding educator with a demonstrated commitment to enhancing dental student participationin biomedicalresearch. Academically outstanding dental students who have chosen biomedicalresearchcareers andare currently enrolledinthe Dental Medicine Scientist Training Program (DMD/PhD) at MUSC will participatein recruitment andspecial activitiesfor this program.
