The application describes the investigator's plans to develop a center for alternative medicine pain research and evaluation (CAMPRE). This is to be a research resource center to promote research on alternative therapies for the treatment of pain. The investigators plan to examine the effectiveness of ethnomedicine, structural manipulation, bioelectromagnetic, and mind-body control therapies and lifestyle changes on several types of pain. A UMAB core team with strength in research methodology, teaching, technical assistance, knowledge of alternative medical therapies, planning, and outreach will be supplemented by a multidisciplinary team of experts who can be drawn in as collaborators or consultants. A Board of Advisors will provide oversight and guidance to the Principal Investigator, Brian Berman, M.D., who is trained in acupuncture, homeopathy, and osteopathic/chiropractic medicine as well as in family medicine. The Division of Complementary Medicine within the University of Maryland Baltimore School of Medicine Department provides the administrative structure and academic foundation to CAMPRE. CAMPRE will assist traditional and alternative medicine (AM) experts to provide five program components: 1) Comprehensive EDUCATION and TRAINING curriculum, 2) OUTREACH and COMMUNICATIONS initiatives, 3) BIBLIOGRAPHY DEVELOPMENT for pain in clinical trials,
