EXCEEDTHE SPACE PROVIDED. The 'Database Managementof NIH-Supported Chimpanzees' cooperative agreement aims to improve human health through effective management and utilization of the national chimpanzee resource. A comprehensive, flexible, and robust database management system representing the collaborative effortsof ISIS, NCRR, and six NIH-supported Chimpanzee Biomedical Research Colonies (CBRCs)will enable authorized personnel to efficiently utilize the research chimpanzee population through records. The existing database management systemwill be improvedthrough data quality initiatives, information services, softwaretools, and client support. In an effort to resolve errors, inconsistencies, and discrepancies, the database curator will work directly with clients and through an extensive data feedback system. Data from extinct chimpanzee facilities, third party information sources, and data from non NIH-supported chimpanzees will be added to the ISIS USChimps main database. The ISIS USChimps main database, DSC ARKS (Animal Record Keeping Systemfor clients), softwaretools to create XML (extensible Markup Language) documents (the format for data transfer between facilities), documentation, common reference files, and tools for the secure data transfer via the Internet will continue to be improved and implemented. Integration of existing software tools for genetic and demographic analysis, as well as hypothetical management policy evaluation will be incorporated into the current suite of software tools. The USChimps web site will continue to be a location for the distribution of information and services. Clients will be supported by USChimps through onsite training, problem resolution, and installation and integration of software tools. Our goal is to provide current, correct, and complete information to NCRR/DCM staff at any time, and to be able to respond to ad hoc requests for information from research chimpanzee facilities and the chimpanzee research community.
