This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. The principal goal of this crossover study proposal is to compare electronic technology with pen and paper for a self- administered questionnaire, the Puerto Rico Comprehensive Center for HIV Disparities Baseline Survey.
Specific Aims :1. Determine whether touch screen computer technology is an accurate methodological tool for a self-administered questionnaire in various sub populations of Puerto Ricans.2. Determine whether touch screen computer technology is an efficient mechanism for self-administered questionnaires at three unique sites in Puerto Rico.Significance:Touch screen technology may provide an invaluable tool for researchers, specifically for self-administered surveys and questionnaires. This study is the first study to be conducted in Puerto Rico to determine the accuracy and effectiveness of touch screen technology compared to pen and paper in various cohorts. Description:A cross over design will be employed to compare two techniques, a tablet PC and pen and paper, for a self administered questionnaire at three sites in Puerto Rico: the University of Puerto Rico Medical Sciences Campus, the Universidad Central del Caribe School of Medicine. At each site 60 subjects will be recruited for participation. After an informed consent is signed, participants will then be randomly assigned to one of two sequence groups (each with 30 subjects per sequence group) with the pre determined order for the completion of the self administered questionnaire. Participants will complete the questionnaire, the Puerto Rico- Comprehensive Center for HIV Disparities Baseline Survey; and then, after a sufficient wash out period, the subjects will return and complete the same questionnaire in the alternate method.
