This award by the Chemistry Division supports a Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) site at the University of Nevada-Reno for the summers of 2006-2008. The program director is Sean Casey who is assisted by co-PI Brian Frost. This program places special emphasis on participants from small four-year colleges having no graduate degree program. A primary goal of the program is to educate students who otherwise have little to no exposure to graduate degree programs about the excitement and advantages of pursuing an advanced degree in chemistry. Each summer, eight students selected primarily from the Western region will join students from the University of Nevada for a ten-week research experience in one of 11 available research groups spanning the areas of inorganic, organic, physical, and theoretical chemistry. The summer programs will be capped-off by an Undergraduate Research Symposium which will include oral presentations from regional faculty at four-year institutions and a poster session by the REU participants.
