This award will support a workshop on scattering and spectral theory organized by Plamen Stefanov of Perdue University and Fernando Cardoso of Universidade Federal de Pernambuco, in Recife Brazil. This ten-day workshop will consist of a five day long mini-course for Post-docs to advance undergraduate students and a five day conference. The subject of the five mini-courses will be (1) The Speed of Propagation of Fronts for the Reaction?Diffusion Equation; (2) An Introduction to Electrical Impedance Tomography; (3) Geometric Scattering Theory with Applications to Conformal and CR Geometry; (4) Sharp bounds on the number of the resonances and applications to the scattering theory; (5) Some Mathematical Problems Related to Medical Imaging. The major themes of the symposium will include General Scattering and Spectral Theory, Theory of Resonances, Inverse Scattering, and Scattering on infinite volume manifolds. The mini-courses will be held in Recife and and the symposium will be held in Serrambi, Brazil.

This workshop is jointly supported by the Office of International Science and Engineering and the Division of Mathematical Sciences
