P.I.: Andrea Polli, Gallery and Web Installation Artist Proposal Number: 0637379

Andrea Polli, a digital media artist living and working in New York, specializes in the interpretation and presentation of weather and climate data using sound. Her work is part of a growing interdisciplinary movement in what is called data sonification. Like its counterpart, data visualization, sonification transforms data to communicate meaning. Her Antarctic project, 90 degrees will be a spatialized sound and visual gallery and web installation, which uses projected images combined with the weather and climate data sonification. Polli will work with scientists to gather and model environmental data. Particularly, she will work in the McMurdo Dry Valleys Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) project site and collect data from automatic weather stations and satellite composites.

Ms. Polli has previously worked in the Arctic (N. project) using Arctic weather data to emphasize both the stark beauty of the pole and the importance of the polar region to world climate. For more information about the artist and her work, visit: www.andreapolli.com/.
