This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing the resources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject and investigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed is for the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator. We hypothesize that we will be able to identify genes contributing to hypertension in African Americans by focusing on physiological pathways that determine arterial pressure. The design is a case-control study involving hypertensive and normotensive African Americans. This protocol involves a single outpatient visit during which the following are obtained: brief history, standardized blood pressure, anthropometric measurements; peripheral venous blood for a basic chemistry panel and DNA. Based on thie information, subjects satisfying inclusion criteria will be invited to participate in a related inpatient protocol, which involves more extensive phenotyping.
