This subproject is one of many research subprojects utilizing theresources provided by a Center grant funded by NIH/NCRR. The subproject andinvestigator (PI) may have received primary funding from another NIH source, and thus could be represented in other CRISP entries. The institution listed isfor the Center, which is not necessarily the institution for the investigator.Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is associated with a low bone mineral density (BMD). Studies suggest a nutritionally acquired resistance to GH, a bone anabolic factor, in AN. We hypothesize that supraphysiological rhGH in patients with AN will overcome the GH resistance and cause subsequent beneficial effects on bone formation. Twenty two subjects will be single blinded, randomized and placebo controlled, while evaluating the effects of rhGH over 3 months. Bone turnover markers, body composition & BMD will be evaluated in this study.
