The HEAL Study is a prospective cohort study of breast cancer patients conducted to examine the associations between weight, physical activity, diet, endogenous hormones, and breast cancer progression. The study enrolled about 1,200 breast cancer cases (a total of 366 cases of African-Americans were enrolled from Los Angeles County who participated in the CARE case-control study; 615 from New Mexico; 202 from western Washington). Currently UNM, USC and the FHCRC have completed the administration of the baseline, 24 month 5-year and the 10-year follow-up questionnaires. Investigators have also completed medical records abstraction at baseline and have abstracted records of patients who on subsequent questionnaires reported a recurrence of or a new breast cancer. Follow-up has been conducted through-out the study period. Multiple analyses have been published, are nearing completion or are underway.
