The goal of this research project is to understand the transport mechanism(s) by which the pigment epithelium (PE) interacts with and supports the normal functioning of the neural retina and the choroidal blood supply. One way the PE does this is by actively mintaining the chemical milieu of the retinal and choroidal spaces. When this ability is lost, for example, by disease of the pigment epithelium, the retina dies and vision may be lost.
