The life-threatening, emotional and economic burdens of premature birth have been greatly alleviated by antenatal or neonatal treatment with potent synthetic glucocorticoids. These drugs have been particularly effective in reducing respiratory distress and intraventricular hemorrhage in premature babies. However, a diverse range of adverse behavioral and metabolic consequences of therapeutic antenatal GCs has been observed in humans and rodents. This proposed research will investigate novel targets of prenatal glucocorticoids that impact long-term detrimental effects on central nervous system control of behavior and metabolism in children and adults.
