With primary care issues increasing in prominence in both practice and policy, thee is a need for capacity building to meet an expanded primary care health services research agenda. The major goal of this proposed AHCPR Institutional Training Innovation is to produce researchers capable of carrying out applied primary care/health services research that is both responsive and relevant to the needs of a changing health care delivery system. We would like to enhance our existing AHCPR- and HRSA-funded UMDNJ- Robert Wood Johnson Medical School Primary Care Consortium Health Services Research Training Program, by expanding partnerships and developing educational experiences and joint research projects with a variety of non-academic organizations and settings. Fellows will have an opportunity to participate in research/evaluation projects on subjects including Medicaid managed care, maternal and child health, access to care and utilization of health services, quality of care, clinical preventive services, practice-based network research, cross- cultural and minority health, chronic disabilities, HIV/AIDS, and community health assessment. Applied research topics and issues will be integrated into the following Fellowship training activities: an annual summer workshop series; an annual Fall Networking Institute; site visits to non-academic organizations and settings; a monthly seminar series; periodic skills workshops; and a journal club. It is anticipated that the collaborative applied primary care/health services research carried out will produce information that (1) is relevant and useful to health care policymakers, payers, providers, and consumers; (2) can be applied in the settings from which the data is collected; and (3) will help address the nations's primary care research agenda and related Healthy People 2000 goals.
