EXCEED THE SPACE PROVIDED. Despite the Institute of Medicine's 1992 report on 'Strengthening Research in Academic Obstetrics and Gynecology Departments' there remains a dearth of obstetrician-gynecologists trained in epidemiologic research and clinical trials methodology to forward evidence based medicine in this discipline. In addition, there is a documented, marked decline in applications for NIH funding from M.D. and Ph.D. faculty in Obstetrics and Gynecology departments from 1985 through 1995. To'addfess~this problem, the Department of Obstetrics, Gynecology, and Reproductive Sciences in the School of Medicine together with the Department of Epidemiology from the Graduate School of Public Health both from the University of Pittsburgh are proposing a fellowship program in Epidemiology and Clinical Trials for Obstetrician-Gynecologists. The Advisory Board and support for the Program come from the highest levels of the administration of the Medical School and the Graduate School of Public Health. The co-Pi's are from the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and from the Department of Epidemiology. Trie Leadership Team for the Program includes a reproductive endocrinologist as the Program Director and researchers in -contraception^ reproductive epidemiology, outcomes research, and laboratory research as members of the team. The focus of the program is contraception and reproductive health. The program requires fellows to obtain an MS in ClinicalResearch, conduct an independent research project in whic~rf'~the fellow is jointly mentored by epidemiologists/biostatisticians teamed with academic obstetrician-gynecologists, and perform course work in epidemiology, biostatistics, grantsmanship and'medical writing, ethics and regulation in research, data management and analysis, and electives in basic sciences appropriate to the program.
