The recent discovery of polymorphic minisatellite DNA regions has made it possible to generate unique genetic """"""""fingerprints"""""""" of individuals through Souther hybridization of genomic DNA. Since the bands produced in an individual fingerprint can be attributed to either that person's father or mother (i.e. the bands are transmitted in Mendelian fashion), the technique is most useful for studying linkage and segregation in samples from family pedigrees. These minisatellite DNA probes can also be utilized to determine genetic linkage to diseases such as Alzheimer's disease. Currently, we are examining a large Alzheimer family to determine if there is any linkage between certain """"""""fingerprint"""""""" bands and the Alzheimer gene(s).
