Calcium-dependent fluorescent dyes have been used to observe calcium waves in astroglia. Mathematical models exist that describe the behavior of these calcium waves in time, but their combined temporal/spatial behavior is unexplored. The goal of this project is to develop a model, similar to reaction/diffusion models for other excitable media, that is consistent with the experimental data. This model will be examined using computer simulations and emphasizing qualitative predictions that can be tested experimentally.
