The objectives of this study are to (1) provide a greater delay of relapse among schizophrenic patients in the second post discharge year and (2) to enhance the levels of interepisodic adjustment. Based upon an analysis of our recent findings, as well as evidence from the neurosciences and environmental psychology, we propose to develop and test a theoretically based and diagnostic specific PERSONAL TREATMENT of schizophrenia. Unlike contemporary psycho-social treatment studies, we wish to broaden the population base to include patients living in low EE households, patients living alone and a greater number of female patients. In a randomized """"""""pilot"""""""" study, we seek to determine the main and additive effects of Personal Treatment, Family Treatment and Drug (alone and in combination) among 80 patients returning to live with family. In an independent trial, 40 patients living alone will be randomized to Personal Treatment or to a control. We seek to determine the """"""""limits of treatment"""""""" on personal and social adjustment. Further, we wish to explore relationships between patient characteristics, treatment components and outcome as the basis for a future prospective trial wherein patients will be randomized to the hypothesized treatment of choice.
